Chathams farmers want own meat brand

Farmers on the Chatham Islands are keen to differentiate their beef and lamb from that produced on mainland New Zealand by have it marketed under its own brand.

In 2008, 15 farmers planned to supply meat under the brand Chathams Pure but the project never got off the ground.

Chathams Federated Farmers representative Tony Anderson says farmers raised the possibility of trying again with Agriculture Minister David Carter on his recent visit to the islands.

He says having a separate brand for Chathams produced beef and lamb would help to increase farmers' profitability.
