Organic lamb prices up

Silver Fern Farms says growing international retail demand and reduced livestock supply have lifted contract prices for organic lamb to new levels.

The company says indicative prices for heavier weight organic lambs are up up by 15% on last year, despite the global financial downturn.

There is already a 20% premium over other lamb sent to the European market.

Silver Fern Farms says demand for organic lamb is largely underpinned by major European retail chains such as Tesco and Marks & Spencer.
