Fonterra has joined the civil defence efforts providing emergency water supplies for earthquake-hit Christchurch

It has used milk tankers to deliver 200,000 litres of water from its Clandeboye processing site near Temuka.

The company is also making available 21,000-litre pods normally used to transport milk by rail.

It says it has been able to collect and process all milk from Canterbury dairy farms at its Clandeboye site.

But its small Plains processing plant in Christchurch was damaged in the quake and is out of action.
