Departments face bigger bill for pest and weed control

9:43 pm on 7 March 2011

Government departments, in particular the Conservation Department and Land Information New Zealand, will have to come up with more money for pest, weed and disease control, following the release of a new national pest management action plan.

Agriculture Minister David Carter says the 25-year plan, developed by MAF, should lead to better co-ordinated and more consistent pest and weed management between the regions.

Mr Carter says the big change is requiring the Crown as a landowner to meet its share of responsibility for pest control.

He says legislation for the pest management plan is before the Primary Production Select Committee and due to be passed before the end of the year.
