More southern dairy award winners

An Ashburton couple has won a regional dairying award on their fifth attempt.

Rob and Debbie Mackle are 50/50 sharemilkers and have won the 2011 Canterbury North Otago sharemilker/equity farmers of the year title.

The Mackles have entered the awards five times and say it has benefited them through business and personal growth towards their goal of farm ownership.

In other awards: the Canterbury North Otago farm managers of the year has gone to Michael and Susan Woodward at Rakaia.

Abigail Vickers, a dairy farm assistant, won the dairy trainee of the year title.

Dunsandel dairy farmer Cole Groves, won the Tasman regional final of the national Young Farmer contest at Lincoln on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, an avocado orchard is the supreme winner of the Northland Ballance farm environment awards.

Sue and Shane Culham run the orchard called Puripak Avocados. It was established in 2004 with the planting of 550 Hass avocado trees.
