NZ and Australia share honours in shearing contest

8:03 pm on 30 November 2008

New Zealand and Australia shared the honours in the first leg of a new season's trans-Tasman shearing test series held in the tiny New South Wales outback town of Hay, at the weekend.

The New Zealand wool handling team, Kerryn Herbert and Joel Henare, won their event.

It was New Zealand's fourth win in a row in woolhandling tests against Australia.

But the shearers John Kirkpatrick, James Fagan and Nathan Stratford were no match for the Australian team, Shannon Warnest, Jason Wingfield and Beau Guelfi, shearing merinos on their home turf.

They went down by 27 points.
