Waimea Valley farmers Grant and Bernie Weller have won the top prize in the Southland region's Ballance farm environment awards.
Their farm, 890 hectares between Balfour and Riversdale, runs about 6000 stock units, comprising a mixture of Texel sheep and Hereford-Angus cattle.
Judges were impressed with the strong family involvement in farming operation, and their aim of looking after the natural habitat, while operating a profitable and productive farm business.
