Mastitis remains the dairy industry's biggest health concern according to the new president of the National Mastitis Council, an international organisation.

Dairy NZ chief scientist Eric Hillerton is the first person from outside North America to lead the Mastitis Council in its 50 year history.

The council is devoted to reducing mastitis and enhancing milk quality by coordinating research and helping farmers understand how to deal with the udder infection.

Dr Hillerton says it's the number one concern of the industry and a key challenge in New Zealand.
