Kiwifruit growers to vote on new levy

The kiwifruit grower organisation is proposing to change the way it is funded, in a move partly aimed at demonstrating its independence from the industry's monopoly marketer Zespri.

Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated funded through an annual agreement between Zespri and its suppliers.

In August, growers will vote on changing to a commodity levy - the MAF-supervised system now used by most producer-funded bodies.

Kiwifruit growers president Peter Ombler says it won't change the amount raised from growers, but will, among other things, reinforce the organisation's status as an independent body, something that's been challenged by industry critics.

If a majority of growers support it, the levy of 1 cent or less per tray of class one kiwifruit, would apply for six years.
