Barley decision pays off

A Central Hawke's Bay farmer severely affected by the worst storm in living memory in the district says he's fortunate in one respect.

John Nation who farms 450 hectares of mainly hill country near Pourerere beach, lost paddocks, fences and access tracks, after more than 500mm of rain caused severe slipping on the property.

He says a decision last year to set up a fodder factory to grow sprouted barley hydroponically for cattle feed, has really paid off.

There has been so much interest in what he's doing, that he's holding a field day on the farm on Thursday, near the end of Pourerere Road.
