Water storage lake proposed for mid-Canterbury

A large water storage lake is being proposed for mid-Canterbury to improve reliability and security of supply for irrigators.

Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd says the lake could be built on one of of its farms near the Rangitata river.

The company supplies water to community irrigation schemes, hydroelectric power stations and stockwater systems.

Chief executive Ben Curry says farmers all over Mid Canterbury could benefit from the plans.

He says lack of water storage is an issue in the region and the lake could increase reliability and security of the water supply, particularly when rivers levels are low.

Mr Curry says it'll take at least two to three years for the company to flesh out the details of the plan, as well as gain resource consent and raise finance.
