New research has confirmed the vitamin power of kiwifruit.
Otago University researchers in Christchurch have found that mice absorbed vitamin C from gold kiwifruit five times more effectively than an artificial vitamin C supplement.
They also retained it in their organs and tissues for longer.
Trials are underway to see if the nutritional results in mice are replicated in humans.
Associate Professor Margreet Vissers says they have been investigating vitamin C levels because many people are deficient, because they don't eat enough fruit and vegetables.
She says mice were used in the study because they tissue that was not possible in humans could be analysed and the results were a big surprise.
The study is part of a science programme funded by Zespri.
