Growers aim for accurate summer fruit production figures

The chairman of Summerfruit Growers Gary Bennetts says plans are underway to find out exactly what volume of fruit is being grown in New Zealand and when it's harvested.

About 150 growers were in Napier on Tuesday for their organisation's annual conference.

Mr Bennetts says only parts of the industry have an accurate picture about the total production of nectarines, peaches and apricots and that has to change.

He says the ultimate aim is to increase the current domestic consumption of summerfruit, from 3kg per person a year to 5kg per person a year.
