Progress on assessing storm-hit farms

Hawke's Bay's rural support co-ordinator says good progress is being made in helping over 60 farmers in central Hawke's Bay hit by a severe storm in April.

Slips brought down by heavy rainfall - 500mm in some areas - caused massive damage to paddocks, fences, tracks and water supplies. Some farmers also reported stock deaths.

The Government agreed to provide funds for Task Force Green workers and the Rural Support Trust.

Co-ordinator Mike Barham says he and two other co-ordinators have just finished visiting every farm to assess what help is required.

He says some clearing up work has already started.

Mr Barham says of the 63 farmers who suffered damage about 50 have agreed to accept some form of help.
