AFFCO is to spend millions of dollars upgrading its lamb processing plant in Wairoa.
General manager Rowan Ogg says two low capacity chains will be changed to a single high capacity chain, which will employ fewer people.
Mr Ogg says the change is necessary to ensure the plant remains competitive.
He says the high capacity lamb slaughter chain should be ready for the new processing season in September.
