Animal feed company wins environmental award

A South Auckland-based animal feed company has won the Environment Minister's supreme Green Ribbon award.

The award recognises efforts to address environmental challenges such as climate change, water quality, biodiversity and waste.

The winner, Eco-Stock Supplies, collects food waste from manufacturers and processes it into supplementary feed for the dairy industry.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says rotting organic waste is a key cause of greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

He says Eco-Stock Supplies has removed 25 tonnes of food waste from landfills over the past year.

Owner and general manager Andrew Fisher says the feed produced is used to replace imported palm kernel that dairy farmers use as supplementary feed.

Mr Fisher, who started the company four years ago, says the award is very humbling.
