Farming couple fined for effluent breaches

A Southland dairy farming couple has been fined more than $60,000 for several breaches of their effluent discharge consent conditions.

Waituna dairy farm manager, Kevin Belling and his wife Rhonda Raymond-Williams, who owns the property, were charged for separate incidents where dairy effluent had ponded after being sprayed from a travelling irrigator.

Other charges related to sludge and effluent from a race flowing into a ditch which feeds into a waterway, and dumping dead cows in a hole where they could have contaminated groundwater.

Southland Regional Council says the farm was found to be significantly breaching effluent consent conditions on five out of seven inspections late last year.

Belling was fined $60,000 plus court costs and Raymond-Williams more than $6000.
