New safety manual for farmers launched

Federated Farmers has launched an occupational health and safety manual in an attempt to drive down the accident rate and lower the cost of injuries on farms.

ACC figures show a farmer is injured every 28 minutes, and every 23 days a farmer dies from a work-related accident.

Federated Farmers health and safety spokesperson Donald Aubrey says farmers need to improve their safety record if they want to reduce the cost of accidents and the threat of having more regulations imposed on them.

Mr Aubrey says ACC paid $78.5 million compensation to the farming sector in 2009, and total agricultural ACC premiums are about $150 million a year.
