Canterbury Regional Council is to spend almost $100,000 to eradicate a damaging weed discovered at a farm north of Cheviot.
It's the first time Nassella Nesiana or Chilean needle grass has been found in Canterbury. Previous outbreaks were confined to Marlborough and Hawke's Bay.
The regional council says Chilean needle grass poses a significant threat to sheep farming in North Canterbury. It will control the weed by spraying and burning.
