Grants available to reduce farmland erosion

Bay of Plenty Regional Council is encouraging farmers hit by recent storms to take advantage of its riparian management programme.

Land resources manager Simon Stokes says the focus is reducing the potential for erosion and protecting land and waterways.

He says the programme provides for a 25% funding grant to farmers who want to reduce erosion and storm-proof their land.

Simon Stokes says the Council's Land Management staff will visit farms and assess the damage to paddocks and stream banks from slips.

He says they will also provide advice on land which has the potential to erode, and what farmers can do to lessen the effects of future heavy rain events.
