New research has started to improve the quality of the New Zealand's goat milk production.

Nearly all of the goat milk produced is sent overseas in the form of powered infant formula or long-life milk powder.

Waikato University researcher Nadine Huitema is working with main processor Dairy Goat Co-operative, which produces more than 16 million litres of goat milk a year, to find out how diet and genetics affects the quality.

Her research involves testing goat milk from 15 herds over two seasons with different diets.

Ms Huitema hopes to finish her research by early next year.
