Finance Minister Bill English has told farmers it is important to get rural debt down to safe levels.
Mr English was speaking at Federated Farmers' national conference in Rotorua on Thursday.
In a speech focusing on New Zealand's economic state, he highlighted concern about the comparatively high level of agricultural debt.
Mr English says it has been an obstacle to the improved returns from agriculture flowing through to other areas of the economy.
