Progress in setting water management priorities

9:39 am on 26 July 2011

Water groups in Canterbury are making progress on their priorities for water management under the umbrella of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

The strategy, endorsed in February last year by all 10 territorial authorities in the province, provides a collaborative approach to managing the water resource.

Selwyn-Waihora zone chairman Peter Jackson says four priorities have been agreed following months of work by the committee and community meetings last month.

Mr Jackson says there's going to be a lot of emphasis on the use of water by rural landowners.

He says the committee must have a draft implementation programme on how to achieve its priorities ready for public comment by November.

Meanwhile, the Ashburton zone committee wants feedback from about what options people there want for water management.

Chairman Matthew Hall says a series of meetings will be held this week so people can have an inoput into deciding what the water managment priorities for the zone should be.

Meeting were scheduled in Methven at 1pm on Monday, at Hinds on Wednesday night and in Ashburton on Thursday night.
