High dollar erodes wool prices again

The high New Zealand dollar has undermined wool prices at auction for the second week running.

The dollar has continued to rise against the main wool trading currencies and reached a new post-float against the US currency since the previous week's sale.

Exporter Wool Services International says as well as the currency factor, greater supplies of wool on offer over the normally quiet European summer holiday season has put pressure on prices.

Lower demand meant only 62% of the 17,000 bales up for auction were sold at the combined North and South Island sale on Thursday.

Mid-micron wool eased by 3%, while cross-bred wools sold for 1.5% - 5% less, depending on type and length. Lamb's wool also lost ground, and only cross-bred oddments showed a slight gain in the South Island.
