Farm sales and prices fall

Farm sales have eased back again after picking up over recent months.

About 300 farms were sold in the three months to July, 90 fewer than the preceding period, Real Estate Institute figures show.

That reverses the trend which had seen sales lift from just 190 in the three months ending March to more than 390 for the June period.

The Real Estate Institute says the drop in sales is partly seasonal, but also reflects the uncertain outlook for financial markets and the exchange rate.

Farm prices have continued their decline. The median per hectare price for all farms sold in the three months to July was just over $14,500 compared with almost $18,000 for the same period last year.

The median price is now at its lowest point since September 2003 and continues the downward trend seen since early 2009.
