Farmers warned not to cut lamb tails too short

5:42 am on 2 September 2011

Beef + Lamb New Zealand says farmers need to be careful this spring about the way they go about docking lamb tails.

Chairman Mike Petersen says he's aware that at least one supermarket chain in Britain, is concerned about lambs from New Zealand having extremely short tails.

He says it's the responsibility of farmers when tail docking to adhere to the best practice guidelines which have been well documented and well supported.

Mr Petersen says he does not have any evidence that UK supermarkets have rejected any lambs from New Zealand, because the tails are too short.
