A report into the use of an inland freight hub owned by Fonterra in Waikato has identified significant fuel savings and environmental benefits.

Waikato Regional Council commissioned the report on the Crawford Street dairy freight depot.

Since opening the hub in 2005 as a central storage site for its Waikato dairy plants, Fonterra has reduced its fuel consumption by 499,000 litres per year.

It has achieved this by reducing tanker movements and increasing its use of rail.

The report says the fuel reduction equates to a drop of 1988.5 tonnes in carbon dioxide emmissions.
