Latest water quality moves revealed

The Government has announced details of a new $9 million fund to help councils and communities clean up nationally significant waterways that have been polluted.

It has also commissioned the Land and Water Forum to undertake the next stage of policy work on establishing limits for water quality, quantity and allocation.

The forum, set up two years ago, has representatives from 58 organisations, ranging from farmers and industry bodies to environmentalists and Maori interests.

A national policy statement on freshwater issued by the Government in July requires regional councils to set limits on both water quality and quantity.
