Progressive Meats in Hawke's Bay is adopting a new trimming standard for carcasses, from the start of the new killing season which officially begins on Tuesday.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand wants all meat companies to adopt the Sure Trim standard, which aims to standardise how much fat and meat is trimmed off a carcase, so farmers get the best financial return.

Progressive managing director Craig Hickson says the standard will give farmers the ability to accurately compare offers from different meat companies for both sheep and cattle.

Trim standard for carcasses currently vary according to the different specifications of each company.

Mr Hickson says farmers need to be confident that the carcase weight quoted by one meat company is consistent with all other companies, which is why it's important for all companies to adopt the standard.
