Psa found to survive in beehive for six days

Scientists at Plant & Food Research have found that the Psa kiwifruit bacteria can survive for six days in a beehive.

In an experiment at the institute's research facility in Hamilton, up to 60,000 bees in a tent were observed while Psa was introduced into their hive.

Scientist David Pattemore says the experiment was aimed at finding out how long Psa would survive in a beehive and on bees in a controlled environment.

Psa has infected more than 460 kiwifruit orchards in New Zealand.
