The Green Party says a new type of possum trap being trialled in Northland could revolutionise pest control in New Zealand.
The traps, invented by a small Wellington company, can reset themselves and kill up to nine possums without the need for human attention.
Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson and Green MP Kevin Hague launched field trials of 300 traps in Trounson Forest in Northland on Friday.
Mr Hague says the traps have the potential to make ground trapping affordable, and to reduce the use of 1080.
He says the Government provided a grant of $4 million to develop and trial the traps, in response to a Greens proposal.
