Minimum price campaign mooted for sheep meat

Federated Farmers says lamb prices are closing in on the federation's target of $150 per head and wool could be next in line to benefit from a minimum price campaign.

The T150 campaign for sheep-meat was set in 2008, to give sheep farmers a price to aim for over five years.

Meat and fibre chair Jeanette Maxwell says it was set at a time when there was no clear focus for the future of the industry and sheep farmers were leaving after years of poor returns.

She says discussion at a council meeting in Wellington showed the success of the campaign could be extended to wool to lock in the big lift in prices in the past year.

She says it's early days, but the federation needs to do more to ensure better returns for wool, to restore viability to the sector.
