Northland farmer fined for neglect

A Northland dairy farmer has been fined $1000 for failing to provide treatment for a cow suffering from cancer of the eye.

Fraser McBeth was convicted in Whangarei District Court after a Ministry of Agriculture investigation into the condition of a cow he had sent to a processing plant earlier in 2011.

A MAF vet who inspected the cow said it was suffering from a severe case of eye cancer that would have been causing the animal pain and distress and should have been treated months before.

The farmer told MAF he had noticed the cow's condition but hadn't done anything about it.
