Picking of flowers underway for pollen

8:02 am on 19 November 2011

Flower picking is underway on male kiwifruit trees in Motueka/Nelson.

Growers get the flowers milled to make pollen. Country Life reports it takes 100kg of flowers to make 1kg of pollen, which is then carefully blown onto female kiwifruit trees.

Bees also pick up this pollen and carry it into the female's flowers which ensures a good pollination.
