Kiwifruit disease spreads to Pukekohe

PSA kiwifruit disease has spread outside the Bay of Plenty region.

An orchard in Pukekohe, just south of Auckland, has tested positive for the virulent form of the vine-killing disease.

Kiwifruit Vine Health confirmed on Monday that an initial test for PSA at the orchard last week has been confirmed in a follow-up test.

The agency says it tested three orchards and it is likely the other two are also infected, but believes the disease can be contained.

General manager John Burke says the spread is the result of plant movement before the discovery of the disease in New Zealand last year.

A priority zone has been set up around the affected orchards. Mr Burke says testing for PSA is continuing throughout the country.

Country Life has reported they are two gold kiwifruit orchards 10km apart and about 7km from Waiuku.
