Five New Zealand wineries have banded together in an attempt to take a larger chunk of the market share in the United States, which is the largest wine market in the world.
Pacific Prime Wines, formed earlier this year by Maimai Vineyards, Lake Chalice, Forrest Wines, Seifried Estate and Carrick Wines, aims to grow the sales of these brands in the US $10 million within five years.
The senior vice president for the joint venture, Dave Nicholas, says they will do so by cutting out the middle man.
He says the company has moved away from the traditional model of using a third party importer and is operating the importing itself.
Mr Nicholas says there don't seem to be any other businesses of the same type in the food and beverage sector.
He says so far Pacific Prime Wines has sent xports worth $500,000 to 14 states.
