The company that owns a new milk powder plant at Mokai near Taupo says the plant has been designed so it can easily be expanded in the near future.

The Miraka plant is 80% owned by Maori farming interests. The other shareholders are Dairy Global Network and the Vietnamese dairy company, Vinamilk.

The $90 million plant was officially opened at the weekend but has been running since August.

It is already running at 80% capacity and is expected to reach full capacity by next season, processing 210 million litres of milk per year.

Miraka chairman Kingi Smiler says the plant has been designed so additional plant can be build adjacent to the existing development and the company hopes to go ahead with that expansion as part of the its longer term strategy.
