New agriculture safety plan issued

The Labour Department has issued a new plan to improve health and safety in the agriculture industry.

The draft plan is part of a Government move to reduce the work-related death and injury toll in the five sectors with the worst records: construction, forestry, agriculture, manufacturing and fishing.

According to ACC figures, nearly 60% of deaths in agriculture in the past five years were related to the use of agricultural vehicles and machinery, the physical and mental health of agricultural workers, slips and falls, and animal handling.

The draft plan focuses on those areas with recommended measures to improve health and safety.

More than 30 organisations have been involved in developing the plan.
