Rural groups join to help Golden Bay clean-up

Two rural organisations have banded together to help clean up damage in Golden Bay from severe flooding.

Heavy rainfall across Nelson and Tasman last week caused widespread damage, including in the Golden Bay settlement of Pohara.

Residents there are clearing out at least 20 properties covered in silt and sewage.

Federated Farmers and Rural Women issued an urgent plea on Monday for more helpers.

Michelle Riley, who belongs to both groups, says people who want to help should report to the Pohara Hall, bring shovels and wear gloves for protection against contaminated silt.

Tankers were able to pick up milk from 43 farms in Collingwood, which was isolated by a slip, by Saturday afternoon.

The farmers had to dispose of two days' worth of milk onto their pastures.
