Newly-elected Alliance meat co-operative director, Dawn Sangster, estimates she travelled more than 5000km attending farmer meetings in Otago, Southland and Canterbury in her campaign to gain a place on the board.

She was one of eight farmers contesting two seats on the board.

Sitting director John Lindsay of Dipton regained his place after having to stand again at the end of his term.

Dawn Sangster won the other seat, left vacant by the retirement of Owen Buckingham after almost 25 years' service.

Mrs Sangster is a farmer from the Maniototo region in Otago and is part of a family company that operates two sheep and beef properties running 10,000 stock units.

She also runs one of New Zealand's largest flocks of angora goats.

Mrs Sangster is a graduate of the Agri-Women's Development Trust's inaugural Escalator leadership and governance programme.
