Third of workplace fatalities on farms

Department of Labour statistics show more than a third of workplace fatalities last year occurred in the agriculture sector.

Provisional statistics show 15 of the total 41 workplace deaths reported in 2011 were on farms.

The department says most of the deaths involved vehicles or machinery and were preventable.

It is to issue a plan for sector later this year aimed at reducing the number of farmers dying and being seriously injured at work.

A three-year quad bike safety campaign is also underway.

Federated Farmers points out the death toll from agricultural accidents has fallen from 19 in 2010 to 15 last year, but says it's committed to bringing it down further.
