Greens say no to new organism import rules

The Green Party says a Treasury recommendation to overhaul new organism import regulations will put the country's agricultural sector at risk.

The recommendation is in Treasury's briefing for incoming Ministers.

Green Party primary production spokesperson Steffan Browning says the Treasury view encourages further weakening of border controls.

He says, since December 2011, there have been a series of steps taken to make the introduction of new plants and animals easier.

He says that could lead to pests being introduced, undermining the long-term viability of agricultural exports.

"We have to put the brakes on that," he says.
