1:31 pm on 11 March 2009

The first applications for afforestation grants provided by the Government and administered by regional councils are being considered on Wednesday.

Some $25 million in contestable funding is available for landowners to plant trees in small forests and on farms as part of the response to Kyoto compliance.

The Ministry of Agriculture is administering another $25 million for public use.

A total of 35 applications covering more than 500 hectares will be considered by a cross-committee of regional councils.
