Rural people who stepped up to the front line to help with the relief effort following the February earthquake will be acknowledged, when the Christchurch Ear thquake Awards are presented at Hagley Park on Wednesday.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised by farmers, meat and wool companies and meat workers through donations to Federated Farmers' Adverse Events Trust.
The Farmy Army was at the centre of the rural response, armed with shovels, wheelbarrows and roast dinners. Its co-ordinator John Hartnell will collect the award.
The Rural Women organisation played a key role in that collective effort.
It took care of the catering for workers, knitted hundreds of woollen garments and launched the successful After Socks campaign.
A spokesperson, Jackie Edkins, says 18,000 pairs of socks have been sold so far raising $100,000.
