Broadband opens door to new on-farm techology

12:58 pm on 22 February 2012

A raft of new technologies which could make farming safer and more efficient are being rolled out alongside the government's rural broadband initiative.

The technologies need high-speed internet and cellphone reception to work.

The first cell towers in the six-year rollout of high speed internet to rural areas were completed earlier this week.

The company Mi5 Security has unveiled a cordless camera that can be set up anywhere on the farm.

Chief executive Helen Wattie says they could be used to monitor such things as fuel tanks or gateways. The images can be sent across the wireless network in real time.

Peter Marne of Harvest Electronics, says temperature loggers that help protect scores of orchards and vineyards from devastating frosts every year need cellphone coverage to send the information.
