Melbourne beat Raiders, Slater on report

9:44 am on 4 March 2012

A brilliant late try from Billy Slater gave Melbourne Storm a hard-fought 24-19 national rugby league win over Canberra but the star fullback faces a nervous wait after going on report for a high shot on opposite number Josh Dugan.

Last year's minor premiers led for most of the season-opener against the Raiders, but were in danger with 20 minutes to go when Canberra scored to level at 18-18, then Dugan put the home side up with seven minutes to go with a field goal.

Asked about the hit on Dugan, Slater said it happened very quickly and said there was no malice in it.

In other results Gold Coast hammered the North Queensland Cowboys 18-nil, and the Canterbury Bulldogs beat Penrith 22 -14.
