Manchester teams beaten in Europa League

Both Manchester teams have been beaten in their first leg round of 16 Europa League football matches.

United were beaten 3-2 at home by Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, while City lost 1-0 to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

Spain celebrated three wins out of three with Bilbao joined by 2010 champions Atletico Madrid and Valencia in posting victories.

Atletico saw off Besiktas of Turkey 3-1 with all of the home team's goals coming in the first half, while Valencia saw off PSV Eindhoven 4-2.

FC Twente, managed by former England manager Steve McClaren, clinched a 1-0 home win in Holland against Schalke of Germany.
