Magusson on target for Olympics

6:21 am on 20 March 2012

The 20 year old Australian swimmer James Magnusson threw down the gauntlet to his Olympic rivals with a stunning win in the 100 metres freestyle last night at the Australian national trials in Adelaide.

Pushed all the way by James Roberts, Magnussen clocked a personal best 47.1 seconds, 19-100ths of a second outside the world record set by the Brazilian Cesar Cielo wearing a now-banned supersuit at the 2009 world championships.

Magnussen is Australia's first world champion in the blue riband sprint, and he's bidding to become his country's first Olympic champion in the event since Michael Wenden in 1968.
