Smail second in Indonesia

The Japan-based New Zealand golfer David Smail made a valiant bid for victory at the Indonesian Open yesterday but came up one shot short, in his first tournament for three months.

Four players including Smail and the faltering Australian leader Nick Cullen were tied for the lead with two holes to play, but Cullen birdied the 17th and held on to win his first title as a professional.

Smail was alone in second place, and fellow New Zealander Michael Long stormed home with a 65, the round of the tournament, to share third place.
