Ferrari's Fernando Alonso claimed his first Formula One victory in eight months in a thrilling, Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday night.

Alonso survived a 50-minute rain suspension, a rash of spins and mishaps and a strong challenge from Sauber's Sergio Perez to finish ahead of the Mexican driver, with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton third.

Red Bull's Australian driver Mark Webber finished in fourth position, and Kimi Raikkoen was 5th.

The world champion Sebastian Vettel had a torrid day which included a spectacular rear tyre blowout and finished 11th, while the Austalian winner Jenson Button finished out of the points in 14th place after a collision with India's Narain Karthikeyan.

Alonso leads the championship with 35 points, five ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with another five back to Jenson Button.
